Freyr Alexandersson is thought to have held talks about taking the top job at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff City have already conducted an interview with Kortrijk head coach Freyr Alexandersson.

This is according to Nieuwsblad, who believe he may have held more than one interview with the Bluebirds after the sacking of Erol Bulut.

Bulut was a breath of fresh air at the Cardiff City Stadium and following their midtable finish at the end of last term, he looked to be the right man to guide the Championship club forward.

But they have made a dire start to the 2024/25 campaign, winning just one point from a possible 18 in the opening six league games.

Following their 2-0 home defeat against promotion chasers Leeds United last weekend, Bulut was dismissed, leaving Vincent Tan and the board with a job to do as they search for a successor.

The Bluebirds were in relegation danger not too long ago, having been near the drop zone for a decent chunk of the 2022/23 campaign.

But they looked to have re-established themselves as a solid team in the second tier last term - and it looks as though all of that hard work has been undone by an atrocious start to this campaign.

Currently rock bottom of the table, they still have plenty of time to get out of the relegation zone and enjoy a decent campaign, but Bulut's successor will have a huge job in his quest to turn things around.

Oxford United manager Des Buckingham has recently been linked with the top job - but Cardiff could look overseas once again to make a managerial appointment.

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan is also the owner of Kortrijk - and it's perhaps no surprise that Alexandersson has been linked with the Cardiff job.

But this story seems to be more than rumours, with Nieuwsblad reporting that the Icelandic coach may have already have interviews about the job in the Welsh capital.

It is thought to be an "open secret" that Alexandersson would be interested in the job, with the 41-year-old having the dream of managing in England.

What adds more fuel to the story is the fact he missed a few training sessions last week due to illness, though some have claimed that he was in Cardiff instead.

The 41-year-old has previously claimed that he is keen to make Kortrijk stable before he leaves the club - and after keeping them in the Belgian top tier - now may be the time for him to move on.

Some may view the potential appointment of Alexandersson as a lazy one.

However, he has done well in the top tier of Belgian football and that is potentially an achievement worthy of a move to the English second tier.

Plenty of players have come from Belgium and made an impact in the second tier before, including Vitinho, Manuel Benson and Anass Zaroury, so there's no reason why Alexandersson can't come in and make a good impact.

Oxford's Buckingham would also be a very good appointment, with the U's head coach doing an exceptional job at the Kassam Stadium.

You have to wonder whether he would be willing to make the move to the Welsh capital though, with Oxford currently doing well.
