Real Madrid’s highly anticipated encounter with Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League is about more than just securing a spot in the quarter-finals.
There is also a significant financial aspect involved, making the tie even more crucial for both clubs.
It must be noted that the revamped Champions League format has proven to be both a sporting and financial success.
The competition now offers increased rewards, with clubs earning €18.62 million just for participating—an improvement from the previous €15.64 million. Progressing to the round of 16 brings an additional €11 million.
Reaching the quarter-finals provides another €12.5 million, while the four semi-finalists will receive an extra €15 million each.
Advancing to the grand final comes with a major financial boost, as both finalists are set to earn €18.5 million. The ultimate prize, however, is reserved for the champions, who will receive an additional €6.5 million.

In total, there is still an impressive €42.5 million up for grabs for the team that goes all the way and lifts the trophy this season in Munich.
This financial incentive makes the competition even more intense, as clubs not only compete for glory but also for substantial monetary rewards.
So far, Barcelona have secured €54.54 million in prize money from this season’s Champions League campaign.
Atletico Madrid follow closely with €53.02 million, while Real Madrid have earned €49.77 million—the lowest among the Spanish teams remaining in the competition.
However, Real Madrid’s potential earnings could increase significantly if they progress further. Last season, after winning the tournament, the club collected an impressive €141 million in total revenue.
With so much at stake, both in terms of sporting success and financial rewards, the upcoming Madrid derby in the Champions League will be a high-stakes battle that neither team can afford to lose.
