Chelsea sporting directors could reach new levels of incompetence by paying to *not* sign player

As we reported earlier, sources speaking to iNews have claimed that Jadon Sancho’s move to Chelsea this summer is in doubt.
To rewind the story to the start – Manchester United signed him for a huge transfer fee from Borussia Dortmund and gave him a monster wage. After a couple of really disappointing years there, including 6 months back on loan with Dortmund a year ago, he was clearly unwanted at Old Trafford.
Chelsea stepped up in the summer, taking him on loan with an option to buy. While it’s never been officially confirmed, various sources have claimed that the option is automatically triggered by the Blues finishing 15th or above, something which is almost mathematically certain at this point.
But then talk of a penalty fee that Chelsea could pay to cancel the deal emerged. After a disappointing run of form, the talk has been that the Blues would rather pay up to not sign the winger.
As recently as last week, Fabrizio Romano was insisting that there was no truth to the idea that the move wouldn’t happen:
“Chelsea’s current plan is to keep Jadon Sancho! They’re not activating any contacts right now to send him back to Manchester United,” he said on his Youtube channel.
But this latest report from the i continues to insist it’s a possibility.

So where has this fresh rush of information come from? Who benefits from us knowing that there are doubts, that’s what you’ve got to ask yourself. We can’t quite figure it out ourselves yet, but it’s very clear that someone is putting these doubts out there.
It would be a truly monumental new level of incompetence from our sporting directors to now be paying to NOT sign player.
