The young star has been playing as a left wing back for RC Strasbourg this season, and has enjoyed an excellent campaign as they push for a European finish. However the young man on loan from Chelsea is yet to decide which nationality he will pledge his allegiance to. Having been born near Liège, Moreira has the choice to play for Belgium or Portugal, the country he has played for at youth level.
DH Sports spoke to the Red Devils manager Rudi Garcia and it is clear that he would like to convince the 20-year-old to play for Belgium in time for his team selection on the 20th May, ahead of two matches against Wales and North Macedonia in early June.
In an interview with RTL Sports, Moreira does remain open to the possibility. “No choice has been made – I haven’t closed any doors. These are my two nations, two countries where I grew up. With what-ifs, we can change the world.” Having been selected for Belgium at U15 level, he opens up about why he made the change to Portugal. “I spent a year with Belgium ,” he begins. “It also leaned with my heart. But Belgium didn’t really have confidence in what I was going to become or not. It was their decision and I didn’t have a problem with that.”
It is clear that he would the suit Garcia’s system and provide a good alternative to current number one left back, Maxim de Cuyper. However if he he does choose to reaffirm his loyalties to the Red Devils, it will be a question only he can answer.
