Club America are leaving no stone unturned in preparing the iconic Azteca Stadium to host matches for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Interestingly, according to reports from AS, the Mexican club is determined to have the stadium fully renovated and ready on time for the global event.

As part of their ambitious plan, Club America are exploring the possibility of hosting a high-profile opening match against Real Madrid on 12 October.

This date conveniently falls during a FIFA break, ensuring that it does not clash with the European football calendar. However, there is a catch. The Spanish giants may be unable to field their star players due to their national team commitments.

They have contingency in place

To address this potential setback, Club America has lined up two alternative opponents: Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Either of these European powerhouses would bring tremendous excitement and visibility to the grand reopening of the legendary venue.

Emilio Azcarraga, the president of Club America, recently shared updates on the stadium’s renovation progress.

He stated that the extensive work includes demolishing sections of the stands and constructing a new central tunnel for player entrances. This redesign aims to modernise the stadium while maintaining its historic significance.

“We hope it will be ready by the end of this year or the beginning of next year,” he mentioned.

With its rich footballing history and capacity to hold a massive crowd, the Azteca Stadium remains one of the most iconic football arenas in the world.

If the proposed match against Real Madrid—or its alternatives—materialises, it will mark a fitting relaunch for this legendary stadium, symbolising Mexico’s readiness to co-host one of football’s biggest events.

Club America’s vision highlights the country’s dedication to delivering a world-class experience for the global football community.
