This evening’s Serie A clash between Lecce and Milan could determine Sergio Conceicao’s coaching future at the San Siro. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, anything other than three points at Stadio Via del Mare could mark the end of the Portuguese manager’s brief tenure.

Conceicao’s reign at Milan had been off to a dream start. Come-from-behind victories against Juventus and Inter in his first two games in charge helped the Rossoneri win their first title in three years, courtesy of a flattering Supercoppa Italiana triumph in Saudi Arabia.

However, things have since gone south for Milan and Conceicao. In addition to an embarrassing Champions League exit to Feyenoord, they sit 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Juventus in Serie A. Therefore, a finish outside the top four for the first time in five years is a distinct possibility.

Milan lost 2-1 at home to Lazio last weekend, bookending a dreadful three-match losing streak in Serie A. As a result, they could make it four top-flight defeats on the trot for the first time since 1986. That would likely be the scourge of Conceicao’s turbulent stint in the dugout.

There’s a silver lining. Milan won their last two clashes against Lecce and could beat them in three consecutive league meetings for the first time since 2003. But after ominously suffering five losses across their last six away games in all competitions, that could be easier said than done.

Conceicao needs Milan to recover in order to salvage his job. Otherwise, today could be his last day at the San Siro.
