The contract saga involving Joshua Kimmich and Bayern Munich has been grabbing headlines in Germany over the last few weeks. Just when things were moving in the right direction, the Bavarian faithful received a concerning update.
According to the report, Bayern offered the player a “slight increase” on his current deal, where he earns around €20 million/year. On Monday, during the supervisory board meeting, a decision was made to withdraw the offer, as they believed the 30-year old was hesitating for too long.
It should be said that they also state how an extension is not off the table, but it is “doubtful” that the club will offer him the same contract terms.
Needless to say, this situation is far from ideal on the eve of a huge Bundesliga game away to VfB Stuttgart and the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen. The contract saga can cause unnecessary distractions.
However, Bayern have done the right thing. No player, however good they may be, is bigger than the club — and they can’t wait forever for a decision. Whether he is extending or leaving, a decision needs to be made as soon as possible.
Fans have criticized Bayern for being pushovers as a result of allowing Jamal Musiala to have a release clause in his contract. You certainly can’t say the same regarding the contract saga involving Kimmich. It is good to see the club taking a tougher stance. The ball is in Kimmich's court. However, the latest update suggest that there is a significant chance of Kimmich leaving Munich in the summer.
There is no denying how good a player the German captain is, and he has been stupendous so far this season — probably Bayern’s player of the season. Despite this fact, the Bavarian club can’t wait forever. They need to plan accordingly in the event of either an extension or a departure.
If a contract withdrawal doesn’t speed up the player into making a decision, what will? Let’s hope this triggers a quick decision either way. The Bavarian faithful will hope that long-drawn contract negotiations doesn't affect Kimmich's performances at the business end of the season.
