Brentford exited the Professional Development League Cup at the round of 16 stage following a 5-2 defeat to Crewe at the Crewe Academy Training Ground on Wednesday.

The hosts went into the break with a two-goal lead thanks to an opening goal which came five minutes in and another goal just after the half-hour mark.

Crewe went on to score three more times in the second half with the young Bees netting two consolation goals close to full-time.

The home side started the game well and caught Brentford off guard with an early goal through Franc Vaughan-Evans.

The young Bees aimed to respond with a quick counter attack following their opponents' opener but it led to nothing.

Brentford forged together a nice passage of play when Isaiah Powis found Domeiro Bobb-Semple out wide before crossing towards Michael McSorley, but his effort went wide.

Despite a good spell of football from Brentford, Crewe punished the Bees again to make it 2-0, this time it was Owen Taylor with the goal.

McSorley nearly halved the deficit just before the break when he drove forward with the ball and unleashed a powerful shot which was saved by the Crewe keeper.

Brentford were extremely unfortunate to not pull one back just a few minutes after half-time when an Otis Honor corner found Powis, whose effort came off the bar.

The away side were dominating possession but yet again were punished by a ruthless Crewe side who were lethal in front of goal.

The hosts made it 3-0 just after the hour mark and 4-0 on 71 minutes with a double from Lucas Swann.

Crewe continued their ruthlessness in front of goal by making it 5-0 through a long shot from Patrick Mlynarski.

To Brentford’s credit, they never stopped working hard and managed to pull back two consolation goals before the full-time whistle.

Substitute Jovan Kasujja did well to assist Naeem Giscombe for Brentford’s first before a well-taken strike from Emeka Peters gave the side a second.
