Former Barcelona and Sevilla defender Dani Alves is currently out on bail as he awaits the result of his appeal against a rape conviction that was handed down in February of 2024. The Brazilian could be facing a financial hit in the coming months though too.
In order to post bail, Alves was forced to stump up €1m and hand over his passport for provisional freedom over the past year, despite initial claims that he did not have the assets to do so. Now his last football team, Pumas in Mexico, are seeking a financial penalty from Alves.
The 41-year-old signed for Pumas in the summer of 2023 after six months back at Barcelona on a two-year contract. However five months after he signed for the club officially, Alves was involved in the incident that resulted in his rape conviction. Pumas Directors have denied that they are taking legal action against Alves, but a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) release has confirmed that they are indeed taking action against the ex-Paris Saint-Germain man.
As per Sport, CAS have received a case from Pumas against Alves for non-compliance with the code of conduct in his contract, which including bringing the club into disrepute. The rumours about legal action that were denied by Pumas say that they could be suing Alves for as much as €6m.
After news broke of the incident, Pumas rescinded Alves’ contract, which he would not have been able to fill. The appeal process is expected to take place in the coming weeks and months, with Alves having now been out of prison for nearly a year. He was initially incarcerated for a total of 13 months after his initial arrest. Alves maintains that he is innocent, but turned himself in to the police to give a statement after finding out that the victim had filed a complaint with the police.
