VAR has been a hot topic in Spanish football, in the wake of several controversies that has put focus on referees and the way the technology is operated.

Real Madrid, in particular, have been in the thick of things as the club have launched an open war against the referees’ association following some poor refereeing in the game against Espanyol.

Following their formal complaint to the RFEF after perceived officiating injustices in their recent match against Espanyol, the club has called out what they consider “manipulation and adulteration of the competition.”

In the wake of recent events, Futgolgate.es has released a detailed and comprehensive analysis of VAR since it has started being implemented in La Liga.

Real Madrid would benefit most

The analysis indicates that since the introduction of VAR in the 2018/19 season, VAR has had a significant influence on decisions against Real Madrid.

The data shows the club would have benefited the most if the technology did not exist, with 68 interventions ruling against them.

The club have seen 31 goals disallowed and nine penalties rescinded. VAR also upheld nine goals for their opponents, while Real Madrid conceded 10 penalties and faced seven red cards as a result of reviews.

In stark contrast, Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona, Real Madrid’s primary competitors for the LaLiga title, have experienced significantly more favorable outcomes.

Atletico enjoys a positive VAR differential of +9, with 51 decisions in their favor versus 42 against. Similarly, Barcelona’s differential is +4, with 41 favorable calls compared to 37 unfavorable ones.

Real Madrid, however, suffers a staggering -27 differential, with only 41 decisions in their favor against 68 against.

Such an analysis is sure to support the case for Real Madrid in their open war against the referees’ association in Spain.
