Alessandro Del Piero assures ‘nobody has asked me to be a candidate’ for the role of FIGC President, but if they do want to propose a plan then he would listen.
The speculation went into overdrive in the last few days that the World Cup winner and Juventus icon was going to stand for the February 2025 election as President of the Italian Football Federation.
Current President Gabriele Gravina is standing for re-election, but there are many figures who are not happy with continuing under his tenure and are trying to find a fresh face to stand against him.
Seeing as he was working this evening as a Sky Sport Italia pundit on the Champions League coverage, Del Piero could not avoid being asked about the rumours.

“I did not just get up in the morning and say I would stand for election. You need to be asked to stand for a start and as of today, nobody from the FIGC has asked me to be a candidate. You can’t exactly just walk in without an invite,” Del Piero told Sky Sport Italia.
“I am someone who likes to listen, talk and keep informed of everything. I was also linked to some fringe against another, that is not the type of person I am. The team spirit is fundamental for me and one man, one woman cannot change the dynamics. You need a team spirit to get where you want to go.
“We all gave our soul for the Nazionale, I won the World Cup with Italy, so I don’t want to go around causing trouble. If they want to call me to sit at a table, we’ll sit and discuss the dynamics, but as of now there is absolutely nothing concrete.
“This isn’t the first time I was asked to comment on being a candidate as President for a team, but there was nothing there either!”
Del Piero’s final comment was a joke referring to the fact that he was floated in the media as a potential new President or vice-president of Juventus when Andrea Agnelli left the club.
