Nuri Şahin’s Die Schwarzgelben, who have yet to string together consecutive Bundesliga wins all season coming into matchday 11, remain in desperate need of some measure of consistency in 2024-25.

Already 13 points behind the pace being set by a rejuvenated Bayern Munich under Vincent Kompany at kick-off, Dortmund got off to the start that would have wanted in the 7th minute through Maximilian Beier’s second goal of the season.

Felix Nmecha would double Dortmund’s lead five minutes from the halftime interval with a well-struck effort from outside of the box, but it all could have been different going into the break if Freiburg had tucked away any of the three big chances they managed to craft.

Freiburg’s night would be sealed when midfielder Patrick Osterhage was given his marching orders after seeing a straight red produced by Felix Brych in the 63rd minute.

Dortmund would make the visitors pay not long after, with Julian Brandt making it three to the good thanks to a sweetly struck free kick.

English youngster Jamie Gittens would get on the action as well when he put Şahin’s troops four-nil up on a big night in the Ruhr Valley, doubling Ramy Bensebaini’s assist tally on the night after the Algerian turned provider for Beier’s opener in the first half.

To compound matters further, Freiburg were reduced to nine men in the final minute of added time after Junior Adamu was also sent packing via a straight red, with Julian Schuster's side washed away completely.

With this result, Dortmund makes it six wins from six at home in the league, while jumping up to 5th in the table and a single point off title holders Bayer Leverkusen.
