Bayern Munich and England star Harry Kane did not mince his words when speaking about the importance of pulling on the Three Lions shirt this week, as he spoke with ITV amid numerous drop-outs from the Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.

Lee Carsley’s side are currently struggling with no fewer than eight withdrawals. One of those drop-outs is former PSV man Jarrad Branthwaite. Kane spoke of the disappointment:

“Whatever happens at your club, as a professional footballer, playing for England is the most important thing there is. The previous national coach, Gareth Southgate, was also very clear about that. (…) This week is a shame. It is also a bit of a time of the season. It is very busy. Maybe it has been abused a bit. If I am honest, I am not that happy about it.”

Carsley has called up Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah as a replacement for Everton’s Branthwaite. He could be in action as early as Thursday, when the Three Lions face Greece at Athens’ Olympic Stadium. The next game is at home to Ireland on Sunday.
