The former EFL striker suggests the Terriers should look no further than John Worthington

A permanent position in the Huddersfield Town dugout will be available in the summer, following the Terriers sacking of Michael Duff.

Their head coach was relieved of his duties following a fourth defeat in five League One matches, with Jon Worthington appointed as interim boss until the end of the season.

Former club captain Worthington will oversee the Terriers for the second time, having previously taken the reins following Darren Moore’s sacking last season.

In light of the managerial change at the John Smiths Stadium, Football League World spoke exclusively to former EFL striker Don Goodman on who Huddersfield Town should look to appoint permanently in the summer.

“In terms of a new manager for Huddersfield Town, I think Jon Worthington has been appointed on an interim basis for the last ten [games], and he couldn’t have got off to a better start than winning 5-1 at home against Crawley.” Goodman told FLW.

“I think if this ten-game interim period goes well - and it’s started well - then he may be in line to emulate the likes of Paul Heckingbottom and Paul Warne, who did the same at Barnsley and Rotherham and ended up getting the job.

“So, I wouldn’t rule Jon Worthington out.

“I think they’ve got a good group of players who could finish the season reasonably strong, albeit they’ve got some tough fixtures to play - Wycombe, Charlton away, Stockport away, so it’s not going to be easy.

“But at this stage I wouldn’t have a clue who I would think would be the next Huddersfield Town manager.”

Promotion pressure leading to shifting League One managerial landscape

The summer transfer window is set to bring significant changes to the managerial landscape across League One, with Huddersfield just one of several clubs likely to be in the market for a new permanent boss.

The timing of Duff's dismissal raised eyebrows given Huddersfield's position just outside the play-off places with ten games remaining. Chairman Kevin Nagle pointed to the dramatic downturn in form since January, with the Terriers winning just three of their last eleven league matches after previously enjoying a 16-game unbeaten run.

This season has seen unprecedented pressure on League One clubs to secure promotion, with several former Championship sides investing heavily in their squads.

For clubs like Huddersfield and Birmingham City, anything less than promotion would be considered a significant failure given their resources and ambitions.

Worthington's impressive start with the 5-1 demolition of Crawley has certainly strengthened his case for permanent consideration.

If he can guide the Terriers back into the play-off positions and potentially secure promotion, the club may look no further than their former captain when making their summer appointment.

For now, Huddersfield fans will be hoping Worthington can provide the stability and results needed to salvage what has become an increasingly turbulent season, as they aim to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt.
