Desperately in need of a new striker, Manchester United have been heavily linked with both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as potential summer signings.
Last week, it became apparent that Man United were the firm frontrunners in the race to sign Cunha, beating out the likes of Premier League rivals Arsenal.
This was due to the fact that Cunha is keen on a move to Old Trafford if the report is to be believed.
Just this morning, The Peoples Person relayed that United have identified Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo as another impactful attacker who they would be keen to add to their ranks.
But while both players could be considered to be attractive transfer targets given their impeccable form this season, Fabrizio Romano is of the opinion that United have identified one player as their priority signing this summer.
“As far as I know, the main target remains Cunha. For Mbeumo, there will be many clubs involved, so it’s an open race,” Romano told GIVEMESPORT this morning.
It appears as if Liverpool and Newcastle United are both in the running for Mbeumo. Unlike United, who need to win the Europa League to qualify for next season’s Champions League, both Newcastle and Liverpool are set to appear in Europe next season, meaning that they’ll hold the advantage should United fail to win the competition.
When it comes to Cunha, this qualification does not appear to be as important, with the Brazilian already keen on a move to Old Trafford.
Mbeumo has been a consistent performer for Brentford in the Premier League, scoring 18 goals and bagging seven assists in 35 matches. His latest assist came against none other than United in their 4-3 thriller on Sunday.
What’s also appealing about Mbeumo is his versatility; the Cameroonian has played as a right winger, striker, and centre-forward this season, meaning that he can fill in for United in any of the front three positions in Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.
In terms of an out-and-out striker, Cunha emerges as an ideal pick. He has scored 15 goals and bagged six assists for Wolverhampton Wanderers in 30 games this season – an impressive showing given how much his team has struggled, at times appearing to be caught up in a relegation scrap.
Other potential signings appear to be Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, both of whom have been linked with United in recent weeks.
Given the developments with Cunha and the other striker targets in United’s sights, there appears to be no excuse for United not to sign a proven goalscorer in the upcoming transfer window. After all, the club desperately needs one.
