Francesco Farioli departed Ajax earlier today amidst a series of rumors linking him with Roma’s managerial vacancy.

The Italian coach, who has also been linked to Roma in recent weeks, gave a long interview to ESPN.nl explaining the reasons for this choice after the second place in the league due to PSV’s comeback.

“It’s difficult. It’s not what I want, but I think it’s necessary for the club,” stated Farioli. “The emotion and tears of the last 24 hours say it all.”

“After the game against Groningen I tried to make ends meet on the way home. It was an emotional day, but at that moment my thoughts were cold. I watched the “film of the season” and it tormented my head. About the things we could have done better, about the things we needed to improve for the future.”

“Then I realized that the distance was too far and that this was the best decision for the club. The club’s goals and mine were the same, but we had different ideas and visions on how to achieve them. The club’s times were also different and the urgency was different.”

“It was difficult to change everything at once, so I thought it was better to change one thing. And that was me.”
