AC Milan managed a thrilling victory against Parma on Sunday at San Siro, coming from a goal behind to win 3-2 by scoring twice after the 90th minute.
Parma twice led during the game through Matteo Cancellieri and Enrico Del Prato who scored either side of Christian Pulisic’s equaliser, and they were on course to do a league double over the Rossoneri.
Then, in the second of six minutes added, Tijjani Reijnders latched onto a Yunus Musah through ball and finished to equalise again. Less than three minutes later, Samuel Chukwueze bundled in a last-gasp winner.
The final score was 3-2 and there was even time for Sergio Conceicao to practically square up to Davide Calabria at full-time in what was an afternoon full of drama. Below are the key statistics from the match.
Looking at the overall numbers, you would think that Milan did actually deserve to win the game. They had 61% of the ball, a higher Expected Goals tally (2.69 to 1.73), one more big chance and more total shots.
What will really worry Conceicao is the amount of opportunities given up against a side that are battling for Serie A survival. Parma had 12 attempts in total, five of which were on target and three of which were bad chances.
Playing like that in the derby in six days would not give the Rossoneri any chance of a late comeback because Inter would simply be several goals ahead. There is room for improvement, without doubt.
For the first time in Serie A history, Milan won a match by coming from behind with two goals scored from the 90th minute onwards.
By scoring the late equaliser, Reijnders became the central midfielder with the most goals in this Serie A season (six goals). He also hit 10 for the season across all competitions.
Christian Pulisic hadn’t scored in Serie A since October 6th, against Fiorentina. He had therefore gone nine matches without goals since then domestically, though he took his spot kick well.
Finally, Tammy Abraham reached his 100th Serie A appearance by coming off the bench in the second half.
Strahinja Pavlovic stayed in the line-up, all while speculation about Stuttgart’s interest was floating around, but he repaid the faith of the head coach with an absolutely brilliant performance.
In addition to winning a penalty for Pulisic’s goal and assisting Chukwueze’s last-gasp winner, the Serbian had 94% pass accuracy on 65 passes, two key passes and two big chances created.
On the defensive side he had three tackles, one interception, one blocked shot, two clearances, five aerial duels won and eight ground duels won out of nine. It was a monstrous performance.
Reijnders is worth mentioning too: 42 touches, 87% passing accuracy, 2/2 long balls completed, 2 shots blocked, 2 ground duels won and 3 shots on target.
