The 35-year-old, who currently plays for Estudiantes in his homeland of Argentina, will hang his boots up after Los Pincharratas' Trofeo de Campeones de la Superliga final against as-yet unconfirmed opposition on Saturday, 21st December.

Fernández began his career with Estudiantes before moving to Europe to join Napoli in 2011. After a spell on loan at Getafe, he joined Swansea City, where he racked up over 100 games in South Wales.

Manager Rafa Benítez brought him to St. James' Park in August 2018 and he was a popular figure during his four years on Tyneside, making 89 appearances and scoring twice in the black and white stripes.

He left for Elche in 2022 before a similarly brief stint with Al-Duhail in Qatar, returning home to his first club Estudiantes in 2023. At international level, he won 32 caps for Argentina, and was part of the squad that reached the World Cup final in 2014 before losing to Germany.

Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Fede all the best for the future.
