AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca wanted Tammy Abraham in the summer, but the striker has so far struggled to fully repay the faith.
As La Gazzetta dello Sport recalls, it has been a rollercoaster relationship between Fonseca and Abraham so far, a continuous up and down of choices, compliments, misunderstandings and rejections.
The Portuguese coach asked for him, wanted him, praised him, dropped him, then brought him back up again and finally put him aside again. Abraham will start from the bench against Roma tonight, his parent club, with Fonseca not option to field him alongside or instead of Alvaro Morata.
In the last few days of the summer window, Fonseca pushed the directors to sign Abraham and they obliged. As soon as he arrived, he immediately deployed him, both alone and in a pair with Morata (who was acting behind him as a playmaker).
Fonseca complemented him publicly: “Abraham has a positive energy, I like it.” The missed penalty against Fiorentina and a big miss against Udinese have led to a number of consecutive games started on the bench.
In essence, the English striker is present in the area (6.84 touches per 90 minutes), but scores little: two goals in the league, two in the Champions League and one in the Coppa Italia. Now goals are needed, because his future is still to be resolved.
