Zećira Mušović will depart Chelsea when her contract expires this summer, although the club have confirmed that the Swedish goalkeeper was offered a new deal.
Now 28, the shotstopper arrived at Chelsea in January 2021 and has lifted ten trophies during four-and-a-half years in the English capital.
Mušović announced that she was pregnant earlier this year and stepped away from first-team duties, and while Chelsea have confirmed that they offered the goalkeeper a contract extension, the Swedish international has opted to leave.
Paul Green, the club’s head of women’s football, commented that “Zećira has been hugely important in setting the culture we expect at Chelsea. She pushes herself and her team-mates every day, which has been crucial to the success we have enjoyed during her time at the club.”
“We are sad to see Zećira move on, but understand the reasons why she has made this decision. We wish her the very best with her pregnancy and in her future football career.”
In an open letter to the fans, Mušović explained: “I have grown immensely in this environment as a goalkeeper and a person. It is safe to say these years have maybe been the ones with the most impact on my personal growth, and it is all thanks to the people around me. The players. The staff. The supporters. And everyone in between.”
“As most of you already know, I am growing another human inside of me. It is a chapter I am ready to embrace thanks to you all. Another challenge I am ready to face.”
“With tears in my eyes while writing this letter, I am letting you know it is time for me to try my wings somewhere else than at Chelsea.”
“But with a lot of love, gratitude and pride, I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done for me, for making me feel welcome, and for making it feel worth leaving my family behind during these years.”
