FLW takes a look at Cardiff City's estimated weekly payroll

Given Cardiff City's struggles at the wrong end of the Championship table in recent years, barring the 2023/24 campaign, it may come as a surprise that they're spending a fair chunk of money on player wages.

Wage bills can often offer a strong insight as to where a team may end up finishing the season but that's not necessarily the case with the Bluebirds, who simply haven't seen ample return on various investments in years gone by.

Although the evidence thus far is mixed, Cardiff will be hoping to be vindicated when it comes to the eight signings they made across the summer window under Erol Bulut, who was relieved of his duties shortly after.

With that said, Football League World has decided to take a look at Cardiff's weekly wage bill according to Capology, a site which provides estimates on financial payrolls across the footballing world.

Cardiff City's weekly wage bill

As per Capology estimates, the Bluebirds are currently forking out £392,538 on wages every week.

It's not an insignificant amount of money by any means, and not too many teams in the Championship are committing to a greater expenditure when it comes to player wages despite the fact that Cardiff are a million miles off contending for promotion at the minute.

Indeed, Cardiff have the seventh-highest estimated weekly wage bill throughout the second-tier. They're spending less than Leeds, Burnley, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United, Luton Town and Norwich City, but all but one of those sides are in receipt of parachute payments and three were playing in the Premier League last season, which does perhaps spark questions.

Cardiff's total weekly payroll translates to an average weekly player salary of £14,019, although the club's top earners are naturally earning much more than that.

Cardiff City's highest earners

The Bluebirds have some seriously high earners on the books, and they've received mixed results from agreeing significant contracts.

Rather unsurprisingly, the club's current highest earner is Aaron Ramsey, who is believed to be taking home a weekly pay packet of £50,000. Whether Ramsey is actually earning quite that much is up for debate, but it does seem inarguable that the ex-Arsenal midfield star is taking home some serious cash regardless.

Despite the sentimentalism of his emotional homecoming back to the club where he kick-started his illustrious career last summer, the move simply hasn't gone to plan for all parties as Ramsey has spent the majority of his time with City out injured.

Another high earner is Callum Chambers, a former teammate of Ramsey's at Arsenal. The versatile defender joined in the summer from Aston Villa and seemingly put pen to paper on a sizeable contract to do so, as he's estimated to be earning £45,000 on a weekly basis.

Meanwhile, the likes of Anwar El Ghazi, Callum Robinson, Joe Ralls, David Turnbull and Manolis Siopis are all tied on estimated contracts worth a weekly £20,000, and have yielded mixed returns for the Bluebirds. The former three, mind you, are all out of contract in the summer and it'll be interesting to see what decisions Cardiff come to, as lowering the wage bill has to be a priority from here on in.
