Gyokeres is one of the best strikers in the world right now, and was only playing in the Championship 18 months ago
Viktor Gyokeres is one of the hottest properties in world football right now, but just under 18 months ago, he was plying his trade in the Championship with Coventry City.
Gyokeres first joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2021, and he became a permanent Coventry player in July 2021, after he had failed to break into the Seagulls' senior side.
He went on to become one of the Championship's best players in his time at the CBS Arena, and attracted attention from numerous top clubs across Europe for his impressive performances in front of goal.
The Stockholm-born striker soon made the move to Portuguese giants Sporting CP last summer, and he has improved even further to be one of the best forwards in the recent history of the Primeira Liga, with his unstoppable goal-scoring exploits making him one of the most coveted players in the sport right now.
His recent form has sparked talk of a potential move back to the Premier League for a possible fee of around £80m, and with the help of Capology, Football League World has decided to take a look at his annual salary at the Estádio José Alvalade, and how that compares to what he earned in a year at Coventry.
It must be taken into consideration that the data provided by Capology are estimations and not official figures.
According to Capology's estimates, Gyokeres earns an annual wage of €2,400,000 at Sporting, which is added up over the year based on his reported current weekly earnings of €46,154.
The Swedish international signed a four-year deal with the Portuguese giants in July 2023, and so his earnings at the club will equate around €9.6m if he sees the duration of his contract out, but a wage increase does seem likely if he continues his impressive goal-scoring form.
It should come as little surprise that what the 26-year-old was earning with the Sky Blues is very little compared to his current wage packet, with Capology estimating that he earned an annual salary of €216,577 while plying his trade at the CBS Arena, which works out at around €4,165 per week.
That means his wages were increased tenfold by making the move to the Primeira Liga from Coventry, and his move has clearly worked out both on and off the pitch so far.
Gyokeres' earnings at Coventry were not only some of the lowest in their squad at that time, but also placed him at the lower end of the Championship earners during his time in England, yet now his wages have increased, and his stock is as high as ever, his annual salary is bigger than every player in the Sky Blues' current squad.
The highest earners in the Coventry squad for the 2024/25 season, based off Capology's estimates, is centre-back Luis Binks, who earns an estimated £30,000 per week, which works out at £1.56m every year.
Gyokeres' earnings, even when changed to pounds instead of euros, place him as a higher earner than the 23-year-old at his new club, with weekly earnings of €46,154 working out at around £38,197, and his annual salary of €2,400,000 equaling around £1,986,000.
Coventry's main goal-scoring threat this term, USA international Haji Wright, is the Sky Blues' current joint-second highest earner according to Capology, taking home around £25,000 every week, alongside fellow frontman Ellis Simms.
It is clear that Gyokeres' move to Sporting was a smart one, as not only has he become one of the world's most in-demand strikers over the last few months, while also winning numerous team and individual honours, but his earnings have shot up from his relatively modest Sky Blues wage, to now earning more than every player at his former club.
