After a commanding 2-0 win against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, Bayern Munich will look to make it two wins this week when they travel to Berlin for clash against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The Bavarian club’s unbeaten run of eight games in the league was halted last weekend as VfL Bochum clinched a shock 3-2 win at Allianz Arena. Despite this defeat, Die Roten remained eight points clear at the top of the points table since Bayer Leverkusen also suffered a defeat against Werder Bremen on matchday 25.
Bayern have been the best team in Germany this season, dominating games and winning games consistently to stay way ahead of their title rivals. The Bavarian suffered a setback last weekend, but the defeat was largely due to the fact that they had to play the entire second half with ten men as Joao Palhinha was sent off in the 43rd minute. A win on Saturday will take Bayern closer to getting their hands on the league title.
Meanwhile, Union Berlin are looking to steer closer to safety in the Bundesliga. They are currently 14th in the points table, six points away from the drop zone. A positive result against Bayern on Saturday will set them up nicely for the final eight games of the season.
Vincent Kompany could ring few changes to the starting XI on Saturday since the game in Leverkusen may have taken toll on players. However, the Belgian coach will avoid making wholesale changes like he did last weekend against Bochum.
Bayern clinched a comfortable 3-0 win when they hosted Union Berlin earlier this season. Berlin are coming into this game on the back of a crucial win against Eintracht Frankfurt, which suggests the game on Saturday will not be straightforward for Kompany’s men.
