United make the long journey to the South Coast this weekend, with head coach Howe admitting the effects of Storm Éowyn could force some changes to his side's preparations for the game at St Mary's.
But the Magpies have been handed a boost this week, with England stopper Pope back in contention after missing the last ten games with a knee injury.
Martin Dúbravka has been in fine form between the posts during Pope's absence, but Howe has welcomed the imminent return to fitness of the former Burnley custodian as his side seek a return to winning ways against Ivan Jurić's men after last weekend's home defeat to Bournemouth.
He spoke to reporters on Friday at his pre-match media briefing at United's training centre in Benton. Here are some of the main topics up for discussion:
On the fitness of Pope and forward Callum Wilson...
"There is a chance Nick will be in the squad. He has started training with the group again. It's great to see.
"With Callum, we are looking at the beginning of February. He is making good progress. We are trying to do the right things by him before he starts training with the group."
On the Saints, who Newcastle beat 1-0 on the opening day of the season...
"It was a really difficult game against a newly promoted team. They showed their qualities that day, they are a very technical team. They have a very aggressive man-to-man style off the ball, so we are going to have to deal with that."
On looking for a response after the defeat to the Cherries...
"We need to learn from Bournemouth, we need a response. I have no doubt the players will respond.
"We will go to Southampton absolutely focused. Southampton are a proud football club. We will have to be at our absolute best."
On a week without a midweek fixture...
"It was a good thing... when you look back at the Bournemouth game, the players looked fatigued. It has given us a chance to rest a few bodies and minds and get back to work."
On Sven Botman's return from injury in the last month...
"It was a challenge for Sven - he has been magnificent since he returned. He has been thrust into action, and by and large he has been excellent. He is one we will look after."
