We asked our Bristol Rovers fan pundit for his thoughts after they announced the signing of Romaine Sawyers
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Bristol Rovers have been praised for completing the signing of midfielder Romaine Sawyers, with his vast experience highlighted as a huge boost to their current squad.
33-year-old Sawyers recently left AFC Wimbledon after a short-term spell with the club, and it was confirmed that he would make the move to the Memorial Stadium on a deal until the end of the season.
The brief spell with AFC Wimbledon acted as a springboard for Sawyers to get his career back on track after being released by Cardiff City in the summer, and he's completed a move to Bristol Rovers, much to the delight of our Pirates fan pundit.
Sawyers is vastly experienced in the EFL, and even had a short spell in the Premier League with West Brom during the 2020/21 campaign, showing the sort of quality and experience he'll bring to the West Country.
We asked our Bristol Rovers fan pundit, Joshua Hemmings, for his thoughts about the deal, and it was clear that he believes that the 33-year-old will be an excellent addition.
Speaking to Football League World, Joshua said: "100%, he's exactly what we need.
“We need a creative spark, we also need versatility in there because too many players can only play one position.
"We also need a fluid player who can pick that pass and also has leadership qualities. He’s 33, he’s been there and done it. When he talks, people will listen because he knows what he’s talking about, because he’s lived his life in the EFL.
“He’s got that nous, he’s good at winning fouls, good at picking passes, very good at knowing when to play it simple, when to play it long. He’s exactly the type of profile we need, and I am buzzing to have him.”
With a wealth of EFL experience, Sawyers is an excellent signing at League One level, and at 33, he's not too old either.
Bristol Rovers are in trouble, and they could get relegated to League Two if appropriate reinforcements aren't brought in this month, and signing a cool head like Sawyers in the middle of the park should give supporters confidence that they'll be okay.
After a month or so of regular football under his belt in League Two with AFC Wimbledon, there shouldn't be any concerns over his match fitness, and he'll be ready to come in and help the Gas pull away from the relegation zone.
When it was announced that he was joining AFC Wimbledon in League Two, you always felt that he was still capable of playing at a higher level, and he'll get the chance to do just that with Bristol Rovers.
With plenty of experience and nous, Sawyers will become a big player for Rovers, and it's a deal that supporters are understandably excited about.
