Arsenal shared the spoils against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Gunners had a relatively good opening half against the Seagulls at the Amex Stadium.
They capitalised on a defensive mishap from the hosts to open the scoring in the 16th minute.
However, Arsenal could not double their advantage and eventually conceded an equaliser.
Joao Pedro won a penalty and converted the same in the 61st minute for the Seagulls.
The incident was reviewed after the game on Optus Sport. Arsenal legend Ian Wright voiced his frustration by insisting that it should never have been a penalty.
The former Gunners striker said that the Premier League have the worst officials in Europe and added that he couldn’t understand how Anthony Taylor awarded the spot-kick.
He said: “I don’t know what to believe anymore. This is ridiculous. We have the worst officials in Europe.
“No way is that a penalty, I’m not having that. I can’t sit with it and I can’t understand it.”
Taylor took a few seconds to award the penalty after Saliba apparently headbutted Pedro.
However, slow-motion replays after the game showed that Saliba made contact with the ball first. It was a simple clash of heads and Arsenal were unlucky with the decision.
The stalemate could prove costly for the Gunners in the title race. They are five points behind league leaders Liverpool, but the Merseyside giants now have two games in hand.
Arsenal’s prospects of winning the league look slim, but the club have a favourable fixture list. Arne Slot’s side still have to face seven of the current top 10 away from home.
The Gunners have no time to ponder over the result. They host Newcastle United in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday and need to turn up with a strong performance.
