“I don’t decide” – Chelsea captain Reece James speaks out on playing in midfield

Chelsea captain Reece James has been asked his thoughts on being asked to play in centre midfield as he did in The Blues last match on Thursday.
The Blues beat Copenhagen 2-1 away from home in the first leg of their round of 16 clash in the Conference League in that game, but it was not a good performance at all from Enzo Maresca’s side.
There was some positives of course, especially with the two goals. A lovely finish by Reece James was followed up by some good work by youngster Tyrique George to assist Enzo Fernandez to score the second goal.
But unfortunately there were more negatives than positive, with one being Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who was once again just terrible, there is no other way to describe it.
James was good in midfield though, and Maresca said after the game that he’s always seen James as more of a midfielder anyway and told him this when he first joined as Blues boss.
James as a midfielder is always something I have been an advocate for as well, so although this might not be such a popular choice for some, for me I like it.

James was asked this week about being asked to play in midfield, and he replied:
“I don’t decide where I play. It’s up to the manager and the rest is down to us. I’m fairly used to the role and with time I’ll improve.”
Good attitude to have, although he does not give a lot away on what he prefers. Sounds like he will just play wherever he is needed.
James played in midfield for Wigan when on loan from Chelsea in the early days, and he was good there then too.
