Arne Slot, Liverpool’s managerial mastermind, has recently addressed speculation regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure, juxtaposing his situation with fellow teammates Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. With contracts winding down and no clear resolutions in sight, the narrative around these key players continues to thicken as we move towards 2025.
The current situation at Liverpool is a complex puzzle of contract negotiations and future planning. Slot has been quick to dismiss rumours that Alexander-Arnold is more likely to exit Anfield than Salah or Van Dijk. This trio of Liverpool stalwarts finds themselves at a pivotal moment, their contracts expiring at season’s end, allowing them to negotiate with non-English clubs from January 1st.

Mohamed Salah last month expressed his disappointment at not receiving a new offer, stating a clear frustration with the ongoing uncertainty. In contrast, Van Dijk remains the ever-calm figure, embodying a relaxed approach whenever the topic surfaces. Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold’s narrative took a turn towards Real Madrid, reminiscent of Kylian Mbappe’s high-profile move to the Spanish giants from Paris Saint-Germain.
In a candid discussion on the American podcast ‘Men in Blazers,’ Alexander-Arnold shared his ambitions of “building a legacy” within football. Slot, however, highlighted the ambiguity of his vice-captain’s statement, pondering whether it referred to a long-term future at Liverpool or a broader career perspective. “I heard about him talking about making a legacy. I don’t know if he meant in terms of [being] at one single club or just as a player,” Slot revealed. He also added, “I also don’t know if it’s true that he’s the one he’s most likely to leave – we don’t talk about contracts in here!”
Despite outstanding performances against teams like Manchester City and Newcastle, Slot noted Alexander-Arnold’s fluctuating form. “He’s done well but I still see with him ups and downs, during games or in between games. His performances against City and Newcastle when he came in were incredible. But I don’t think he reached the same level against Fulham,” he explained. Slot emphasizes the quest for consistency, acknowledging that while there has been improvement, there remains ample scope for Alexander-Arnold to elevate his game further.

On the international stage, Alexander-Arnold has yet to cement his role as a regular right-back for England, a situation Slot contemplates without concern. He compares it to the Dutch scenario involving legends like Patrick Kluivert and Ruud Van Nistelrooy, noting, “Jude Bellingham can play in all three positions in the midfield. That can help you get more caps – not just quality but competition you face. We had this [for the Netherlands] with Patrick Kluivert and Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Both were good enough to get 200 caps but they had to compete so it is difficult.”
As Liverpool navigates this tricky period of contract talks and speculations, Slot’s role is crucial. His tactical nous and management will be pivotal in shaping the future of these key players and, by extension, the trajectory of the club. Liverpool fans will be hoping for a resolution that keeps their stars at Anfield, as they continue their pursuit of domestic and European success under Slot’s leadership.
In conclusion, while the rumours swirl around Anfield, Slot remains focused on crafting a resilient and competitive Liverpool side, with Alexander-Arnold continuing to be a significant figure in his strategic blueprint.
