The Briton produced a sparkling half-hour cameo on Thursday night, scoring United’s equaliser on the half-turn and ending the match with a 40-yard chip. United eventually won by a 7-1 aggregate margin and will face Tottenham in the final.

He has struggled for form since signing for United from Chelsea in 2023, suffering a series of injuries which have prevented him from recording consistent minutes. His most recent setback came in January’s Manchester derby, which he exited injured after just 14 minutes. He returned to fitness last weekend, though, starting and scoring as United lost 4-3 to Brentford.

Speaking at full-time, though, he said it was a difficult period waiting for his first goals at Old Trafford.

“It was too long, he said. “I have had injuries and setbacks, but I always stayed positive and knew something good was gonna come/ Tonight it has paid off in a semi-final.

“I carried on going, working hard, enjoying it every day, trying to stay positive. It has been difficult since I’ve been here.

“When I have the opportunity like this to come on in these games, I was just trying to make an impact, and as I say, today it paid off.”

He continued, thanking the United faithful for their continued support: “The crowd has been unbelievable. They stuck with us.

“For me personally, [I scored] my first goals here at Old Trafford, so it is a special night, one I have been waiting for a long time.”

Mount’s second goal, a long-range chip, will be remembered among United’s best ever, and will live particularly long in the memory if they lift the Europa League trophy in two weeks. Breaking down the sequence, he said he just wanted to get it on target.

“As I saw [Julen Agirrezabala] come out, I was in front of my midfielder, so I just had in my head if it comes to me, first touch and shoot.

“I didn't mean for it to go on my left foot, but just tried to get good contact. I just tried to get it on target really.”
