Simone Inzaghi got exactly the reaction he wanted to last weekend’s loss to AC Milan from Inter Milan against Udinese.

A draw away to Manchester City in the Champions League, on the other hand, was a result that gave the Nerazzurri a real injection of confidence.

But losing to Milan in the derby was devastating for Inter.

Inter had not just lost to city rivals Milan.

The 2-1 scoreline was if anything kind to the Nerazzurri.

Milan had been the dominant force for long spells in last Sunday’s derby. They overran Inter in midfield, creating a number of dangerous chances through incisive counterattacks.

Inter had to rely on some heroics from keeper Yann Sommer to prevent the Rossoneri from wrapping up the match a lot sooner.

And this was in a fixture where the Nerazzurri had gone on an historic streak of six consecutive wins over the last couple seasons.

A result like last Sunday’s could be the catalyst for a real sense of doubt for Inter.

The Nerazzurri have yet to hit the kind of form that defined their relentless Serie A title triumph last season. And they certainly won’t do so by playing the way they did against Milan.

But there was little evidence of that sort of doubt yesterday.

It was not a perfect performance by Inter against Udinese. Particularly a bit of sloppy defending that allowed the Friulani to score twice from their only two major chances.

But by and large, it was an organized, physically intense performance by Inter.

Inzaghi saw his team show that they see last weekend’s derby disappointment as an exception rather than the rule.
