Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has made clear that the Coppa Italia is an important priority for his team.
The Nerazzurri coach spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, after the Nerazzurri’s 2-0 victory over Udinese at the round of sixteen stage of the competition.
Inter face a real balancing act this season between different competitions.
The Nerazzurri have the usual busy Serie A campaign. Then, there are several additional matches in the new Champions League format.
On top of that, Inter will be playing in the Club World Cup at the end of the season.
That doesn’t leave a great deal of room for the domestic cup competitions.
Inter play in both the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana this season.
In the case of the Supercoppa, the Nerazzurri will face Atalanta in the semifinal next month. Then they could also play in the final.
Meanwhile, the Coppa Italia is another few matches in the calendar.
Inter will face Lazio in the quarterfinal stage of the competition. And they could have has many as three further matches in addition to that.
Naturally, there are some suggestions of teams prioritizing one competition over another when there are so many fixtures.
And often, it is the domestic cups which get the short straw.
But that is not the view of Inter coach Inzaghi.
“I’m happy,” he said of getting to the quarterfinals of the Coppa by beating Udinese. “We played a good match, very well-organized.”
“It wasn’t easy against a quality team. We’re deservedly in the quarterfinals.”
“We care a lot about the Coppa Italia,” Inzaghi made clear. “We want to go as far as possible.”
Meanwhile, Inzaghi also gave his thoughts on his squad depth. That was very much on show with a heavily-rotated team seeing off Udinese.
“When I say that I have 25 starters, it’s not just a cliche,” the Inter coach made clear.
“That’s really what I think.”
“U hope that I can have them all available. I like to have as many choices as possible.”
“We have some injuries in defense,” Inzaghi noted. “But I’m asking some of my defenders to put in overtime, and they’re doing great.”
