Inter Milan midfielder Kristjan Asllani admits that he was initially “discouraged” by criticism, but learned to tune it out.
Asllani spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, after this afternoon’s Serie A win over Hellas Verona. He started that match in holding midfield in place of Hakan Calhanoglu.
Asllani joined Inter from Empoli in the summer of 2022.
The Albanian made the move at a young age, but there were big expectations for him at the Nerazzurri.
Inter saw Asllani as a long-term solution in the holding midfield role.
Initially, Asllani was signed to be the backup of Marcelo Brozovic. Brozovic had been a key player at the base of midfield for several years at Inter.
Then, Hakan Calhanoglu emerged as a new starting player for Inter in the regista position.
Therefore, Inter sold Brozovic. They made Calhanoglu the first-choice starter in holding midfield, and then Asllani became the backup option for the Turkish international.
Throughout that time, Asllani has not always had it easy.
The 22-year-old has had his opportunities, both from the start and from the bench. But at the same time, he has taken the blame for the way the team’s performances have sometimes dropped off without Calhanoglu.
Asllani started against Verona today in Serie A. This was the Albanian’s return to the lineup after he had struggled with injury prior to this month’s international break.
“I’m happy about the ninety minutes,” said Asllani.
“The matches that I played for the national team were also helpful,” he added.
Asllani admitted that “I was coming off the back of a tough period due to a knee problem.”
“I’m happy with my assist and with the three points, three points are vital.”
Meanwhile, Asllani gave his thoughts on his improvements on a mental level. “I’ve grown,” he said. “At first, I’d read a couple pieces of criticism and I got discouraged.”
“Now I’ve learned not to read anything like that anymore,” the 22-year-old said.
“And to just concentrate on the pitch. Also thanks to my family who have always supported me.”
