It’s no secret that Borussia Dortmund have had a topsy-turvy season, and much change is expected within the squad this summer, whether Niko Kovač remains in charge or not. One thing does feel certain, however, and that’s that Borussia Dortmund will need some fresh funding to improve their squad, especially if the club is without Champions League football next season.

Should Dortmund miss out on Europe, they will be forced to sell players who command hefty transfer fees. It could also be difficult to hold onto certain players who seek Champion League football every season.

The most likely candidate to exit this summer, is Jamie Gittens who has a market value of about 50-million Euros. Gregor Kobel and Nico Schlotterbeck each have a value of about 40-million, according to Transfermarkt, and both are in high demand. Karim Adeyemi is another player who could leave this summer, but he recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Black and Yellows, turning down a lucrative offer from Napoli mere months ago.

Yet it seems like Nico Schlotterbeck, might choose to embrace Borussia Dortmund’s culture and become the next face of the club. He’s recently been tipped for club captaincy, and now it’s been reported that Schlotterbeck is prepared to stay at the club and build something in spite of poor results this season.

I’ve written about the potential candidates to take on the armband, and Nico Schlotterbeck was the top prospect. If the German International does stay at BVB, helping this club reclaim success, then he can become a club legend, not just for his loyalty, but also for the club’s future success. Schlotterbeck is only 25, and still has some of his best years ahead.
