Burnley are interested in signing Brighton forward Evan Ferguson on loan during the upcoming January transfer window, but face competition from Premier League duo Leicester City and Fulham.

Alan Nixon revealed via Patreon that the Clarets are interested in the services of the Seagulls man, while Football Insider reported that both the Foxes and the Cottagers are also keen on a loan move for the Ireland international.

Clarets fan pundit reacts to Burnley's interest in Ferguson

Football League World asked our Clarets fan pundit, Josh Lucas, if he would be happy with the potential addition of Ferguson.

He said: "Evan Ferguson would obviously be an incredible signing.

"We know he can do it in the Premier League.

"He scored a hat-trick against Newcastle, and (he's) been an all-round good striker for Brighton, who obviously do quite well in the Premier League most years.

"I feel like it would be incredible if he came to us, but it seems like a bit of a nothing link at the minute.

"So, if it happens, then it's incredible, but I wouldn't be surprised if he went to a Premier League side.

"If he did come to us though, we're missing someone in the final third, I feel like he would suit the role perfectly."

Clarets may struggle in transfer battle for Ferguson

As alluded to by Josh, Ferguson would be a fantastic signing for the Clarets, as Scott Parker's men battle to make an immediate Premier League return.

Compared to direct promotion rivals, such as Leeds United, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough, the Lancashire outfit are goal shy, which is currently holding their automatic promotion bid back.

The loan signing of Ferguson would be the perfect remedy for the Clarets' issues in the final third, as he showed his goal scoring prowess during the 2022/23 campaign, as he scored 10 goals in 25 appearances for the Seagulls across all competitions.

He added a further six Premier League goals to his tally last campaign, but this term he has fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of new boss Fabian Hurzeler, and amid the strong form of fellow strikers Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro.

But despite his current lack of game time, Ferguson seemingly has all the tools which could help fire the Clarets to automatic promotion at the first time of asking.

However, amid competition from Premier League clubs such as Leicester and Fulham, Parker and co may struggle to get their hands on the talented Irishman.

Having already proven his worth at top-flight level, Ferguson would be more likely to lean towards a move to either the King Power Stadium or Craven Cottage, as opposed to Turf Moor.

Furthermore, although he has found Premier League minutes hard to come by this term, the striker is still proving he can operate at the highest level, as he scored during Ireland's recent Nations League win over Finland.

But on the other hand, the Seagulls could be more willing to deploy Ferguson out on loan to the Clarets, rather than a Fulham side who sit just four points behind Hurzeler's men in the Premier League table.

Perhaps then, it is the Foxes who can be viewed as the favourites in this particular transfer battle, as although they can offer the 20-year-old top-flight football, their relegation worries are very different to the battle for European places the Seagulls are battling for.

While Clarets fans will dream of having a potentially prolific Championship striker in Ferguson, his parent club may prefer for him to go to the Foxes, where he would still ply his trade in the Premier League.
