Italian journalist Paolo Condo accused Inter Milan of letting a false sense of security hinder their pursuit of a historic Supercoppa Italiana feat.
During his recent Corriere della Sera analysis via FCInterNews, Condo blasted Inter’s attitude in last night’s 3-2 defeat to AC Milan.
Simone Inzaghi looked on course to win a record-extending sixth Super Cup title as a manager.
Indeed, the Nerazzurri went 2-0 up after 47 minutes, courtesy of Mehdi Taremi and Lautaro Martinez’s goals.
However, Inter got seemingly complacent after establishing a two-goal lead, letting Milan claw their way back into the match.
Theo Hernandez’s superb free-kick initiated the comeback only five minutes after Taremi’s goal.
Despite boasting a slender lead heading into the final ten minutes, the reigning champions failed to defend their crown.
Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham turned the game on its head, ending Inter’s three-year Super Cup reign.
As a result, Inter missed a glorious chance to draw level with record-time champions Juventus.
More importantly, it was a unique occasion as they could’ve become the first team to win four consecutive titles.
“When coaches explain that formation numbers matter little because it’s the attitude that makes the difference,” Condo said.
“They mean exactly what Milan showcased so spectacularly in their remarkable comeback in Riyadh.
“At one point, you could hear Inzaghi shouting, ‘They have four forwards.’
“He implied that with a cooler head, Inter could have exploited the wide-open spaces in Conceicao’s makeshift formation.
“But this was a final, and by then, the underdog Rossoneri were willing to do whatever it took to claim victory.
“Once again, Leao delivered, setting up Abraham’s 3-2 goal, and the blow deeply wounded Inter.
“At 2-0, they had felt secure and truly dominant, believing they were winning the final in a manner opposite to the semifinal; as a great team with a small Lautaro against Atalanta, but as a small team with a great Lautaro yesterday.
“Now, sandbags to the windows: defeats like this must be managed carefully, as they shake you to the core.”
