Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen full back Jeremie Frimpong, as the club begin to prepare for life without Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Reds are considering Frimpong as their first summer signing, with the Dutch international emerging as one of Europe’s standout right-backs.With Alexander-Arnold reportedly edging closer to a move to Real Madrid after allowing his contract to run down, Liverpool face the task of replacing a player who has redefined the modern full-back role. While academy graduate Conor Bradley has impressed in spells, the club are keen to bring in high level competition and Frimpong fits the bill. The 24-year-old has just enjoyed a stellar campaign with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, and played a key role in their historic unbeaten domestic season that ended with a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double. His attacking output has drawn particular attention, with five goals and six assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances, eclipsing Alexander-Arnold’s 10 contributions in the Premier League this season.Despite the growing interest from across Europe, Frimpong’s future may be settled quickly due to a release clause in his contract. Liverpool could sign him for just under £30 million, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Dutchman’s international ties could also aid his potential move to Anfield. Already capped by the Netherlands, he shares the national team dressing room with Liverpool trio Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.Beyond his technical and athletic qualities, Frimpong brings vital European experience, having featured regularly in both the Champions League and Europa League with Leverkusen.Despite not playing as a natural right-back for a number of seasons, Frimpong would tick a lot of boxes for Liverpool, able to cover for and compete with both Conor Bradley and Mohamed Salah on the right flank.
Should the deal be finalised, Frimpong could be a defining addition to Liverpool’s summer rebuild. His arrival would provide Liverpool with much needed depth and a new dynamic on the right-hand side, as they continue a new era under Arne Slot.
