John Stones has suffered another injury blow after being taken off in the early stages of Man City’s Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid.
Stones suffered an injury during the build up to Kylian Mbappe’s opening goal of the second leg.
His injury did not appear to be caused by any contact with a Madrid player.
A stretcher came onto the pitch but the England international managed to hobble off the pitch.
The 30-year-old has been badly affected by injuries of late and has only managed 20 appearances in all competitions this season.
After a lengthy injury lay-off, he returned to play against Aston Villa in December but then suffered another injury.
He has been back in the team of late after returning against Chelsea but now looks set for another spell out, in what is also a blow for England and boss Thomas Tuchel.
City head coach Pep Guardiola last month said he planned to be cautious with Stones after his return.
“I spoke with him and he feels better,” he said at the time.
“In the past he feels better and can play maybe 45 minutes. We’re going to take a little bit longer to be sure that when he comes back he cannot make a step back.
“This is the situation with John. It’s not easy for him. He makes the effort to come back and try.
“I asked him to come back against Aston Villa and help us but in the end he could not play more than 45. That is not good.
“He has to recover well and needs more time to be able to play every three days.”
It is unclear yet as to the severity of Stones’ injury with Guardiola likely to provide an update in his post-match press conference.
