Windass is one of several senior players whose contracts are set to expire at Hillsborough this summer, however there is an extension option within his deal - although it is one that the forward himself claims that is pretty much up to him and not the club.

The forward had doubt cast over his future at the club earlier this week when his father Dean, a Hull City legend, hinted that Saturday’s clash with Portsmouth would be his son’s final home game for Wednesday.

With that game having concluded in a 1-1 draw and Wednesday away at Watford on the final day of the season next weekend, Windass may have played his last game in front of the Owls’ home support.

It has been a frustrating few months for Wednesday, who have seen the possibility of a play-off push fade away week by week.

A mid-table finish still represents significant progress for Danny Rohl’s side, considering they were fighting for their Championship status last term, but there is sure to be an element of regret around the club, as they wonder what would have been over the next few weeks.

Nevertheless, following the club’s final home game of the season on Saturday, Windass was in fairly positive spirits on social media.

The forward took to Instagram to deliver the following message: “Good performance, shame we didn’t end this season where we wanted to be, but let’s sign off with a win next weekend. Support was great.”

Dean Windass admission means Josh Windass exit from Sheffield Wednesday is likely

Following Dean Windass' suggestions on his X account earlier in the week, speculation has been building over the last few days as to whether Wednesday could be about to lose one of their key men.

The 56-year-old former frontman said of his son: "We’re playing at Hillsborough, and how ironic that I’ll be going on Saturday to watch our Josh; final game at Hillsborough for Josh.

“He’s had a great career at Sheffield Wednesday. He scored a lot of goals, obviously the most important one at Wembley. So we’ll see what the next chapter in his life is.

“You’ve got to make tough decisions and that’s what you’ve got to do in life.”

As a result, there are understandably concerns from Wednesday fans that next week could see Windass sign off from the club as a whole, rather than just this current campaign.

Ever since Windass first joined Wednesday on loan from Wigan Athletic in January 2020, he has been a hugely influential player for the blue and white half of the Steel City.

He has now spent five-and-a-half years at Hillsborough, and netted their all-important stoppage-time winner in the League One play-off final to see off Barnsley back in 2023 and secure promotion for the club.

He notched 12 league goals that season, and since Wednesday’s return to the second tier, he has gone from strength to strength as a player.

Windass struck six league goals and two assists from just 25 league appearances last term, in what was an injury-hit campaign for the 31-year-old.

This year however, he has excelled. The attacker has spearheaded the Owls’ push into the top half of the Championship table, and looks set to finish as their top goalscorer in the league with 12 to his name.

He also has five assists so far, topping off what has been the strongest season of his career at Championship level.

If next Saturday does prove to be Windass’ final game for Wednesday, it will undoubtedly come as a huge blow for the club to lose such an influential player.
