Bruno Fernandes has never been one to shy away from responsibility, but his leadership at Manchester United has been a topic of intense debate this season. After yet another stellar performance in United’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City, Fernandes addressed Roy Keane’s repeated criticism, making it clear that he uses it as motivation rather than letting it affect him negatively.
Keane, known for his no-nonsense approach to leadership, has frequently questioned Fernandes’ captaincy, suggesting that the Portugal international does not have the character to guide United out of their challenging season. However, with 31 goal involvements in all competitions this season, Fernandes has continued to prove his worth as one of United’s most influential players.
Speaking after the win against Leicester, Fernandes addressed the impact of public criticism on his mentality. While he admitted that no player enjoys hearing negative comments, he emphasised that such criticism fuels his drive to improve.
“I think both. Obviously, it is not nice to hear bad things about you; no one likes it. But at the same time, it motivates you and makes you think about a lot of things that people think you have to improve,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.
Although he initially avoided mentioning Keane directly, Fernandes later acknowledged that the former United captain’s words carry weight, given his legendary status at the club.
“Obviously, I know you are talking about Roy Keane. As I have said before, I have huge respect for Roy Keane. I think he is one of the best captains the club has had and he was an amazing player for the club.”
While Fernandes respects Keane’s views, he remains committed to leading United in his own way, focusing on setting an example through his training, performances, and attitude on and off the pitch.
Despite the ongoing debate about his leadership, Fernandes’ statistics this season tell their own story. With 16 goals and 15 assists in all competitions, he has been a key driving force behind United’s attack.
In the Premier League, only Mohamed Salah (54) and Erling Haaland (33) have more goal involvements this season. This further highlights how crucial Fernandes is to United’s attacking output, despite the team’s inconsistent performances.
His ability to find the net and create chances for his teammates has been a standout feature of his game. Speaking about his goal-scoring ambitions, Fernandes said:
“I want to score as many goals as I can as it’s a big part of my game, and I need to assist my teammates. I need to get on to the edge of the box and get goals, as it is one of my qualities.”
Roy Keane has never held back his opinions, especially when it comes to Manchester United. His view that Fernandes lacks the leadership qualities needed to be captain has sparked plenty of debate among fans and pundits.
Keane has previously argued that Fernandes complains too much on the pitch and doesn’t always show the resilience and authority needed to rally the team in difficult moments. Given United’s struggles this season, those concerns are understandable.
However, Fernandes’ numbers suggest that he is one of the few players consistently performing in an otherwise underwhelming squad. While his leadership style may not be as fiery or aggressive as Keane’s was, he leads through technical quality and work rate.
With United still fighting for a place in the top four and pushing for silverware, Fernandes will have more chances to prove his leadership qualities on the pitch.
Manchester United are entering a crucial period in their season. With the Premier League top-four race tightening and cup competitions still in play, Fernandes’ performances will be pivotal in determining how successful United’s campaign will be.
While Keane’s criticism may not disappear anytime soon, Fernandes has shown that he is more than capable of handling the pressure. If he continues his impressive form and delivers in key moments, he will silence the doubters and further cement his role as United’s midfield leader.
Regardless of whether fans agree with Keane or not, Fernandes remains one of United’s most important players, and his response to criticism suggests that he thrives under pressure rather than crumbling beneath it.
