Manchester City’s legendary outgoing playmaker Kevin De Bruyne has admitted he still has major ambitions with the club before departing in the summer.
The 33-year-old announced earlier in April that the ongoing campaign would be his final season at the Etihad Stadium having spent the last decade winning everything available to him at Manchester City.
Follow-up reaction from Pep Guardiola appeared to reveal that the decision not to renew De Bruyne’s contract was led by the club themselves, with Txiki Begiristain and Hugo Viana preparing what many anticipate to be a major rebuild of the Etihad squad.
The Belgian playmaker still has plenty of outstanding quality in his locker however, as illustrated by an outstanding performance against Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend in which a goal and assist was provided to claim all three points.
And Manchester City will be hoping that at the tail-end of their relationship with one of the finest attacking midfielders ever to grace English football, it can be De Bruyne who inspires the club to a strong finish this campaign.
Speaking to television broadcasters after a dramatic 5-2 win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday lunchtime, Kevin De Bruyne was keen to stress his determination to not only ensure the club qualifies for the Champions League, but also wins further silverware.
“We need to win these games,” De Bruyne said of Manchester City’s Premier League run-in this season. “Perform the way we did today; be aggressive, press forward.”
The Belgium international continued, “Of course we’ve struggled this year, but we need to find a way to win and the most important is this club – next year – plays Champions League and hopefully we can bring that to them.
“I want to go with a Champions League [place] for this team because they deserve it. We’ve been in the Champions League for the 10 years I’ve been here so I hope we can do that for the team next year. I’ll just try to play good football like always.”
There also remains a possibility that Manchester City could end their competitive campaign with a second piece of silverware, having opened the season with a Community Shield win over Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.
“Yeah, that would be brilliant,” De Bruyne responded on the subject of one final trophy to end his Manchester City career.
“To be in the semis again is great, we play Nottingham [Forest] who have done really well. But we’re going to try and give it our best shot of winning, and that would be really nice.”
Before then, there are a few more Premier League commitments to focus on including their next opponents; a stern final visit to Goodison Park where a revived Everton side under David Moyes awaits.
