Legendary Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff offered a damning verdict on the new Supercoppa Italiana format.
In his recent interview with 1 Station Radio during ‘1 Football Club’ via FCInterNews, Zoff also named Inter Milan the leading Scudetto favorite.
Atalanta ended the calendar year as pacesetters.
However, their lead at Serie A’s table summit is fragile, to say the least.
Indeed, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men trump second-placed Napoli on goal difference alone.
Meanwhile, third-placed Inter are only a point behind with a game in hand.
Despite lagging narrowly behind fellow Scudetto hopefuls, Zoff sees the Nerazzurri as the title contenders.
“I believe the championship is still open,” he stated. “Of course, these three teams have an advantage, but nothing has been decided yet.
“It’s too early to make final assessments, perhaps we’ll have a clearer picture at the end of the first half of the season.
“However, on paper, Inter seems to have something more than the others.
“But, of course, football is unpredictable, and teams still need to play the matches.”
Simone Inzaghi prepares his squad for a daunting semi-final tie against Atalanta.
Eternal rivals AC Milan and Juventus will trade tackles in the other last-four showdown.
However, Zoff doesn’t appreciate the new four-team format but understands the decision to move it to Riyadh.
“I don’t like this format. They’re going overboard with the interruptions to the league.
“I preferred the old system, with just one match between the league champion and the Coppa Italia winner.
“I understand the economic needs of playing abroad, but introducing more teams risks turning this competition into another league.
“The calendar is getting overloaded. Playing abroad can make sense because it brings in money.
“But having a tournament with four teams, and maybe six next season, is absolutely excessive.”
