In a recent showdown that will surely be remembered, Liverpool demonstrated a masterclass in strategy and skill at Anfield, securing a 2-0 victory against Manchester City. This victory not only reinforced Liverpool’s dominant position in the Premier League but also exposed the vulnerabilities of a faltering Manchester City team.
The match unfolded under the guidance of Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, whose tactical acumen has been a catalyst for the team’s recent surge. From the kickoff, Liverpool attacked with a zeal that was palpable, swiftly taking the lead in the 12th minute through Cody Gakpo, who expertly finished a cross from Mohamed Salah. The team’s relentless pressure persisted throughout the game, culminating in Salah himself netting a penalty in the 78th minute following a foul on Luis Díaz by City’s keeper, Stefan Ortega.

This performance is part of a larger narrative of resurgence for Liverpool under Slot’s leadership, marking their 18th victory in 20 matches across all competitions. In contrast, Manchester City is experiencing a concerning downturn, with this loss marking their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat—a streak not seen since 2008.
Despite the vocal criticisms from the stands, with Liverpool supporters cheekily suggesting Guardiola might be “sacked in the morning,” the Manchester City manager was quick to remind everyone of his six Premier League titles. However, in a post-match discussion, Slot offered a perspective that eschewed any pity for the seasoned manager, stating:
“You feel sympathy or empathy with the managers that are in a really bad place,” Slot said. “They’ve either lost many games or they’re down at the bottom of the league but Pep has won so many things and he’s shown so many times already.”
“That’s why the league is not decided in November. Last season they were eight points behind Arsenal I think in February. No one has to feel sorry for Pep, maybe for other managers but not for Pep.”
“He’s won so many things and he will be able to bring City back.”

The past week has been monumental for Liverpool, not just in terms of results but also in terms of psychological victories against high-calibre opponents such as Real Madrid and Manchester City. Reflecting on these achievements, Slot emphasized the continuous challenge that lies ahead:
“Playing against Real Madrid, playing against Man City, teams that have been and are so, so good with managers that have won so many trophies, it’s always nice to come out in those situations as a winner.”
“But the reason why these teams won so many things is that they weren’t able to win once or twice, they were able to win every few days. We were really happy with these two wins but we want to achieve more than this. Winning once or twice, even against these big teams, is not enough to win anything at the end of the season.”

“I saw Arsenal yesterday and I saw Chelsea today, they are all capable of getting the same winning streak that we have so let’s not get carried away with one or two wins. It’s all about consistency to the end of the season, keeping the players fit and keeping them playing with this much energy.”
As Liverpool continues to dominate the league, the focus remains steadfast on maintaining form and fitness. The road to the championship is long, and while the recent victories are worth celebrating, they serve as reminders of the consistent effort required to claim the ultimate prize in English football.
