Kylian Mbappé’s (25) move to Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer was a highly predictable one. The France captain almost made the move to the Bernabeu back in 2022 before ultimately opting to extend for a further two years at PSG.
However, Los Blancos’ courtship began much earlier and for Mbappé, it has always been a dream to play for Real Madrid. That move became a reality upon the expiry of his PSG contract. Despite links to Liverpool, Real Madrid’s pursuit of the France captain was almost uncontested.
However, Cyril Linette, the former CEO of L’Équipe and who recently lost the LFP presidential contest to Vincent Labrune, believes that Mbappé should have made the move to England… but not to Liverpool.
It has been a tough start to life at Real Madrid for Mbappé, both on and off the pitch. The competition with Vinícius Jr on the left has seen the former AS Monaco forward move centrally, and it hasn’t suited his game. For this reason, his move to the Bernabeu was non-sensical, according to Linette.
“I’m not saying that Mbappé is heading towards failure but he is joining a club where, in his position, there is a player at least as good as he is. It makes no sense. He will have spent his whole career playing at clubs where there is a left winger at least as good as him, with Neymar at PSG and Vinícius Jr at Real,” he began.
Linette then revealed the Premier League club that he believes Mbappé should have joined. “He could have gone to England, tried to get Manchester United going again, for example. There, he could have played in his position and could have written a great story. I don’t see what exceptional things he can achieve at Real, who have already done everything without him,” he told RMC Sport.
