A ketchup analogy is often used to describe the breaking of goal-scoring ducks. Sometimes you shake the ketchup bottle continuously and nothing comes out but when the ketchup does finally release from the bottle, it does so in great quantity. PSG will be hoping that is the case for them. Luis Enrique’s side have been awful in front of goal in recent weeks. Les Parisiens benefitted in spikes in form from Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé in the opening weeks of the season, but once their efficiency levelled out, dropping to more ordinary levels, PSG struggled, leading to a slump in recent weeks. That was evident against Nantes and then against Auxerre a week later. Many PSG players were guilty of wastefulness, none more so than Randal Kolo Muani who had a great chance to snatch all three points late on. Having missed it, he is unlikely to be gifted too many more chances in the starting line-up any time soon.

However, the returning Gonçalo Ramos netted against RB Salzburg in midweek with Nuno Mendes and Désiré Doué also getting on the scoresheet. Given the quality of opposition, few deductions can be taken from that win, but what PSG can take from it is confidence. That could prove pivotal.

Les Parisiens have had the edge over Lyon in recent times, winning their last three games and scoring an impressive 10 goals in the process. Even with confidence renewed, it feels unlikely that they will blow Lyon away with a goal-scoring frenzy, as they have in recent months. And that makes this a dangerous tie because OL are more than capable going forward. They are unbeaten in their last eight in all competitions, and unbeaten in nine games in Ligue 1. In their last three games in all competitions, they have netted 11 goals and the likes of Malick Fofana, Georges Mikautadze, Alexandre Lacazette and Rayan Cherki are all fit and firing. For any team, they are a formidable attacking outfit that are difficult to contend with. PSG approach this as favourites but only marginally as OL look more than capable of getting on the scoresheet at the very least.
