Rasmus Hojlund and summer signing Joshua Zirkzee have scored just five Premier League goals between them this season

Lisandro Martinez believes that Manchester United's defenders and midfielders must take responsibility for the poor service that has limited Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee's goal tallies this season.

Hojlund has scored just twice in 18 Premier League matches this term, while summer signing Zirkzee has netted three in 23.

The two forwards have drawn criticism for their low output, but Martinez believes he and his team-mates must shoulder some blame for their struggles in front of goal.

The Argentine centre-back was speaking after scoring the winner in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Fulham. It was United’s only shot on target across the whole match at Craven Cottage.

“Absolutely, we take the responsibility,” Martinez said. “I think we played many long balls to them, and for sure it’s tough for them, especially because they fight against two centre-backs. The centre-backs here in the Premier League are really difficult.

“But they [Hojlund and Zirkzee] have to do better as well. They are really good players, but I agree with you. I think we have to continue [to do] more, and put them in better spaces on the pitch.

“We have to find them in the right places, dangerous places, to make them score.”

Martinez’s goal secured back-to-back wins for United for only the fifth time this season, following Thursday’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Rangers in the Europa League.

“We have to be humble,” the 27-year-old told reporters. “We have to keep this momentum.

“We won today, we celebrate today, and tomorrow we focus on the next game. When you win, the confidence goes up. It’s good for us to get the three points.

“It’s really important, because we haven’t had the best results in the Premier League. This has to be every weekend for us; we have to win every game.”

United play their final match of the league phase of the Europa League on Thursday when they head to Romania to face FCSB at the Arena Nationala in Bucharest.
