Liverpool and Real Madrid directors will have lunch on Merseyside ahead of their clash in the Champions League, and while that is fairly standard procedure for the suits in Spain, the topic of their meeting will not be. The latest coming out of the Spanish capital is that they will discuss the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
According to Marca, they will try to clear up what the course of action will be with the England right-back. The Madrid-based paper emphasize ad nauseam that relations between the two sides are excellent, and say that Liverpool even picked up the phone in September to ask Real Madrid whether they were pursuing Alexander-Arnold, which they said they would discuss during a face-to-face meeting when the two sides met. While there was no certainty at that point, Dani Carvajal’s injury has made up their mind for Real Madrid that they need to invest in the position.
With Alexander-Arnold stalling Liverpool and no progress on a contract renewal, the logical conclusion is that he will head elsewhere as of next summer. Yet during their lunch, which will take place at 13:30, Real Madrid will try to establish whether a deal in the January transfer window is possible – something that so far has been deemed unlikely.
Alexander-Arnold has been linked to Real Madrid since March, and the lack of news on a new deal with Liverpool does not bode well for the Reds. It would be a major surprise if they had not been doing their best to hammer out a new deal for the past six months, as one of their best and most-loved players.
