Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are set to enter the world of multi-club ownership after identifying a potentially suitable club to buy.
When Michael Edwards, previously the Reds’ sporting director, accepted the role of FSG’s CEO of football last year, he signalled that expanding the club’s portfolio was “necessary”.
Multi-club ownership, or MCO, has become a growing trend in football, with Premier League club owners such as Chelsea’s BlueCo and Manchester City’s City Football Group expanding their operations across the world in recent years.
Put simply, MCO is the ownership of two or more football clubs by a single entity, group, or individual. Liverpool will make up part of such a group if FSG follow through on their plan.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, FSG is “exploring a deal” to purchase Spanish outfit Malaga after sending a delegation to the club’s facilities in February to “evaluate a potential acquisition”.
It’s claimed that FSG are “considering and open to all forms of investment” and want to inject a level of money that could make an impact on the football operations.
FSG’s “immediate focus” is on the 51 percent stake owned by Qatari businessman and majority shareholder Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani. Malaga are currently in administration.
The Boston-based group see growth potential in Los Boquerones, who currently reside in the Spanish second tier. The club were relegated from the top flight just five years after reaching the Champions League quarter-finals in 2013. They spent last season in Spain’s regionalised third tier.
FSG are “exploring multiple options”, having also conducted due diligence and visited clubs such as Levante, Elche, Espanyol, Getafe and Real Valladolid over the past year.
FSG are a multinational sports holding conglomerate who, alongside Liverpool, owns Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League, NASCAR’s RFK Racing, and TGL’s Boston Common Golf.
