Liverpool transfer target Jonathan David has talked openly about his future. The Canadian's contract expires soon.

Jonathan David appears to have ruled out moving in the January transfer window. Lille could well move the player on at the start of the year, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

January, then, is the final time Lille can get a fee for one of the prized assets. But it doesn't appear that they will.

David has publicly talked down the possibility of moving in the winter window. He feels it's too difficult to adapt midway through the season.

“Going to a club midseason is never easy,” David told the Athletic. “It’s not like the beginning of a season where you have a pre-season, you get to know your team-mates, you have time to gel.

"In January, things are very hectic. It’s about right now. It’s tougher.”

Of course, there is another potential reason David doesn't want a January move. Free transfers typically land the player a lot more money - there's no transfer fee involved, after all, and competition is higher.

So while he's absolutely right about 'gelling' with teammates, he'll also know that a free transfer is where the lucrative offers come in.

Now, will Liverpool be able to navigate that?

Liverpool and Jonathan David

Liverpool have been linked with David for a long, long time. He was one of the players they considered back in 2020 before signing Diogo Jota - the Reds were very high on him.

Ultimately, he was too young at the time but the Canadian has been enjoying a good season with Lille. Seven Ligue 1 goals already this season, on the back of 19 last season and another 24 in the campaign before that.

Tuttosport believe there's quite the race in Italy to snap him up - but they also throw Liverpool's name in the mix as a prominent suitor. We can't imagine the Reds would pass up a free transfer here, if they believe his wages are reasonable.

But it would require a bit of trimming. The squad is pretty well-stocked up top and David wouldn't necessarily be a first-choice player. It's difficult to convince a free transfer to arrive as second-best.

So no Liverpool fan should really hold their breath on this one. David is certainly an option for the Reds in 2025, but not in January.
