Liverpool continue their defence of the Carabao Cup with a trip to the south coast to take on Southampton.
Arne Slot’s side can move into the semi-finals with a win at St Mary’s, as the Dutchman targets silverware in his first season in charge.
Consecutive Premier League draws have somewhat slowed momentum, though the Reds battled brilliantly against Fulham at the weekend. Reduced to 10 men after just 17 minutes, Liverpool twice came from behind to take a point at Anfield.
Southampton enter the contest after a 5-0 home humiliation against Tottenham. The Saints were five goals down at half-time and the result brought the end for Russell Martin.
With the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, Martin was sacked after the latest loss. Simon Rusk has been placed in interim charge.
Arne Slot looks set to be without a recognised left-back with Andy Robertson to serve a one-game band for his red card against Fulham. Kostas Tsimikas has returned to training, though looks unlikely to feature. Ibrahima Konate also remains sidelined with a knee issue, leaving the Reds short of defensive depth.
Alexis Mac Allister should return after serving successive one-game suspensions in Europe and the Premier League. Ryan Gravenberch could be handed a much-needed rest, while Harvey Elliott will hope for his first start of the season.
Slot has confirmed that Diogo Jota will not start, despite making a goalscoring return from injury off the bench against Fulham.
Liverpool: Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Gomez; Mac Allister, Endo, Jones; Elliott, Gakpo, Nunez.
Southampton host Liverpool in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday 18th December 2024. Kick-off at St Mary’s is 20:00 GMT.
Southampton vs Liverpool will be shown on Sky Sports Football, Sky Sports Ultra, Sky Go UK and NOW TV UK.
