As Liverpool braces for a crucial showdown with Manchester United, the threat of a weather-induced postponement looms large. Heavy snow has blanketed the Liverpool area overnight, prompting Liverpool City Council’s Safety Advisory Group to meet and assess whether the 4:30 pm kick-off at Anfield can proceed. The Mirror reports that amber weather warnings for snow and freezing rain remain in place for both Liverpool and Manchester.
The Met Office has issued an amber warning, indicating a potential risk to life and significant travel disruption. These warnings are more severe than yellow alerts but fall short of the extreme red level. The primary concern for the Safety Advisory Group is the safety of supporters traveling to Anfield, particularly those making the journey from Manchester on treacherous, icy roads. United fans face the added difficulty of navigating potentially hazardous conditions.

Recent weather-related disruptions have not been uncommon. Last month’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park was postponed due to Storm Darragh’s fierce winds of up to 90mph. The current conditions raise similar concerns for Sunday’s game.
Postponing Sunday’s match would add to Liverpool’s already congested fixture list. The Reds remain five points clear at the top of the Premier League table, having played two fewer games than second-placed Arsenal. Their midweek clash with Brighton ended in a 1-1 draw, offering a slight cushion.
However, a postponed game against United would only exacerbate scheduling headaches. The short trip to Everton, yet to be formally rescheduled, further complicates matters. Manager Arne Slot will be keen to avoid disruptions to his squad’s rhythm as they aim to maintain their title charge.
The Safety Advisory Group will monitor conditions closely, waiting until the last possible moment to make a decision. Beyond the immediate safety concerns for fans traveling to the game, there is also the issue of ensuring their safe return home.
Despite the weather warnings, there is currently no indication that the game will be called off. Both clubs continue preparations for the televised fixture, set to air live on Sky Sports.
“Heavy snow has fallen in the Liverpool area throughout Saturday night into Sunday morning,” reports The Mirror. With temperatures unlikely to rise, roads are expected to remain icy and dangerous.
Liverpool secured a commanding 3-0 victory over United at Old Trafford earlier in the season, and they’ll be eager to complete the double over their arch-rivals. United, currently languishing in 14th place, will be desperate to turn their season around, making this clash all the more significant.
The possibility of a postponed Liverpool vs Manchester United fixture has sparked mixed emotions among fans. On one hand, safety must be the priority. No game, regardless of its importance, should put supporters’ lives at risk. However, the potential disruption to Liverpool’s momentum is a concern for many Reds.
Anfield Index reader Matt, a lifelong Liverpool fan, shared his thoughts: “If it gets called off, it’s just another fixture headache we don’t need. We’re in a great position right now, and these delays can affect players’ focus.”
Meanwhile, United supporters see this as a possible lifeline. The season has been disastrous for them so far, and any delay could offer more preparation time to rectify their issues.
Another fan, Sophie, added: “The rivalry with United means this match is huge for both sets of fans. But at the end of the day, safety comes first. We all want to watch the game, but we want to make it home safely too.”
With heavy snow continuing to fall and freezing conditions expected to persist, the footballing world watches closely. Arne Slot’s Liverpool side will undoubtedly be ready, but the elements could have the final say in this historic rivalry.
